Goldie Hawn the famous actress and comedian grew up in this quaint and charming circa 1927 Brick Duplex in Takoma Park, Md 20912. The Hawn Family lived in the Left Side of this duplex. Goldie's small wedding to John Hudson was in the backyard of this home. Goldies father Edward Hawn, a musician, died in 1982 and Goldie's mother Laura lived in this home up until 1984, when she sold the house and moved to California, where she died in 1994. Goldie graduated from the old Blair High School in Silver Spring, Md in 1963 and attended American University in Washington DC. Although she grew up in Takoma Park, her "stomping ground" was Downtown Silver Spring in it's heyday. She speaks of her fond memories in the Documentary Film "Silver Spring, Story of an American Suburb"

Thanks for the Idea, I still have to get through the ones I have for Silver Spring first, I still have for Silver Spring:
The "INFAMOUS" Jack Abramoff (who still owns a house here)
Lefty Drisell
Carl Bernstien
Ben Stien
Harold Soloman
For Bethesda and Potomac:
Nils Lofgren
Sylvester Stallone
I know where Wonder Woman Lives, but will have to do some research to find Joan Jett's house! Thanks!
If you can think of any more please give me a holler!
Debbie,
Great post. I knew about Goldie Hawn being from Maryland and going to American University because I went to AU in the 70's. I heard Cass Elliott also from Maryland (Mama's and Pappa's) was Goldie's roomate at American.
I've just been reading some of your local blogs they are terrific. I have such fond memories of Hofbergs deli in Silver Spring. The best matza ball soup. We always would go there late at night after the discos and always had so much fun.
Thank You Mitchell,
I think Cass Elliot might have been from Baltimore, Maryland. I loved Hofbergs too! I have fond memories of my Dad taking me there for lunch when I went to his office in Silver Spring. But, Unfortunately, it bit the dust here about 15 years ago.
Hi Ann,
Did you mean Ledo's on University? It is still there (since early 1950's) and has the best ever pizza. There was also another Italian Restaurant that was very popular and competed with Ledo's called Leonie's (also on University Blvd). Sadly that one went out of business in the mid 80's. It had a really unique front doorway that had round windows and this facade that looked like an art deco type wave?? The Kona Kai sounds familiar but it's not around anymore.
I loved Leonie's! I used to go there over 30 years ago.
I also remember the original Jerry's Sub shop in Wheaton (now a Ledos Pizza restaurant) before it was sold and franchised. Now, they had incredible subs! I remember eating in the back of the "dive" that it was - uneven tables that rocked, bikers with scary tattoos and not so wholesome news clippings featuring photos of obese biker chicks on the walls!
Do you remember when Wheaton Plaza was considered one of the nation's most revolutionary and largest shopping malls in the country when it was built? It didn't have a roof, was only one floor and had a Woodward and Lothrops and Montgomery Ward anchoring the plaza. That was pretty much it!
Wow, what great memories. My dad took me to Hofbergs every Sunday for bagels. Mr. Hofberg stood by the door wearing a white apron full of lolly pops for the kids.
One year I sat next to Goldie Hawn on a blanket watching fireworks in Silver Spring.
Max Levin lived above me in Langley Park before he bought the original Jerry's in Wheaton from Jerry.
Outdoor malls are the latest thing .... they should take the roof off of Wheaton Plaza now.
Anyone remember Christmas shopping downtown Silver Spring in the 1950's?
