Old DC Candy Icon Sets up Shop in Silver Spring!

The 2010 Resolution Breaking, Ultimate Sugar High (Candy Store has opened in the Old Building that I last remember as being an Army Recruiting Station:
8408 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, Downtown 20910

Velatis Storefront

The smell inside the shop is intoxicating.  They make the candy in the building, fresh, no preservatives.  You can watch it being made.  If you are old enough to remember the candy sold exclusively at Woodward and Lothrup "Woodies" stores in Wheaton Plaza, Montgomery Mall, Chevy Chase and the original Downtown Woodies you are probably going to be in nostalgia heaven when you taste it.  The caramels are out of this world, even if you are not a "candy person".   Velatis has a history of candy making that goes back over 150 years starting in Richmond, Va during the civil war and in Washington, DC from a shop opened in 1866.  Their history is so interesting it is worth the read, as are the testimonials from people all over the DC area.  They plan to add ice cream to the menu at the shop and are having a Grand Opening in March.  Stop by and buy some caramels, you will not be disappointed!  Happy Sugar High!

McMansion Watch in East Silver Spring - From Condemned to Almost Done?

Easley Before
This post was inspired by a another local blogger www.ThayerAvenue.com  who posted about a ginormous McMansion going up in East Silver Spring on Thayer Avenue.

Most of East Silver Spring still has "normal sized" older houses.  The few McMansions or new infill construction that we do have REALLY stand out.

One example on Easley street is the "McMansion with no windows"  It started out as a small bungalow home built in 1928 between 2 other similar houses.  The home had a larger and deeper than average lot size of 12,180 sq ft.

It was torn down sometime ago and remained a big watery mud hole with trash and debris in it for a few years.  I once walked by the lot and noticed they were still getting junk and other mail delivered to 701 Easley, it was strewn all over the front of the mud hole. While it was still just a hole, it caused a lot of concern and complaints from the adjoining neighbors and the neighborhood in general.

I though they'd never build anything there.  Then all of a sudden a huge foundation went up this past year.  The picture does not do it justice - it is ENORMOUS.  Can't wait to see what it will look like when it's finished.  It will certainly stand out amongst the small old bungalows on that street.

Above Post from December 2007

Fast Forward 2 years from this original post about the house and this house still looked the same - except for the CONDEMENDED notice on the front door from Montgomery County. The notice was posted in June or July of this year,  most likely because of the many complaints from the neighbors.

Photos from August 2009 . . . . .

East Silver Spring McMansion

Photo of the house today

WOW - The house looks a lot better this week - But still has the same condemned sign on the front door from this past summer.

Finally after almost 5 years it is starting to look like a decent house . . . .

Halloween is Over - Time to Think Turkey and the Annual Silver Spring Thanksgiving Parade

Somewhere in Silver Spring . . . . the skeleton house was my pick for the best Halloween Display I saw this year.
Silver Spring yard Halloween 2009
My photos do not do it justice because they are taken in the daytime.  There are skulls mounted on the gutters with fire spewing out of them (at night) like funeral pyres.  Still can't figure out how they did that?

At night this yard really looks like a graveyard with skeletons hanging in trees, coffins, sitting in chairs, hanging from the highest window, sprawled on the ground in pieces. Someone is very talented and would be super at settting scenes.

Now that we are into November that means the annual Montgomery County Thanksgving Parade is aroung the corner.  The Parade takes place on the weekend before Thanksgiving, Saturday November 21st this year.
Time: 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon

Save the Date for the event that heralds the beginning of the Holiday Season!
Downtown Silver Spring on Georgia Avenue from Sligo to Silver Plaza on Ellsworth Drive to Fenton Street.

There will be Marching Bands, including the Redskins Marching Band and many High Schools from around the county, Macy's Parade type Balloons, floats, vintage cars, dogs, horses, ethnic dancing groups, police groups and fire trucks with Isiah Leggett as the grand marshall this year.

The Silver Spring Regional Center is looking for volunteer help with the Parade:
We need volunteers for the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade to act as balloon handlers- leading the giant Macy-like Thanksgiving balloons and dressing up in costumes to be on the floats. Also, we need assistance with set-up and break-down.

This opportunity is great for Groups!
Small Grp: 3-10: YES
Medium Grp: 10-25: YES
Large Grp: 25-50: YES
X-Large Grp: 50+: YES

The hours are from 7:30am to 1:30pm (you need to be present the whole time) on Saturday, November 21. Dress warmly, as you will be outside. You should try and wear black as your outside layer color. Once you arrive, you will be assigned a position and given directions about your volunteer job. Crystal Ball Reading for the Silver Spring and Takoma Park Real Estate Market

The Real Estate Market in Silver Spring and Takoma Park continues to pick up momentum. The question is, have we hit bottom and are we heading out of this or is this just a short upswing before the bottom really falls out?
I wish I had a Crystal Ball but . . . . . "Those that live by the Crystal Ball eat glass"!

My suggestion right now would be that if you are wanting to buy, jump in now.  You can't go wrong. If you are selling or need to sell, sell now and price your home to move fast. If this is a short upswing then you don't want to miss your chance to sell now during an upswing. How long of a window might we have?  This is another question that is begging for a Crystal Ball.

My guess is that we might see a better market for at least the next 60 days.  The problem longer term could be interest rate increases or the increase in inventory of foreclosed homes. Either of these could have a negative impact. My suggestion is NOT to watch national trends, but focus mostly on what you see taking place in our community. This will certainly give you the best perspective on our Silver Spring or Takoma Park, Maryland Real Estate market.  Click on the chart below to get your free "Real Time" Market Stats for Silver Spring or Takoma Park:

Silver Spring Real Estate and Homes in Historic Capitol View Park, MD

Capitol View Park was Montgomery County's First Historic District.  This Old Historic Neighborhood is down by the Railroad Tracks and just past Forest Glen in the area of Silver Spring that borders Kensington, Maryland.

In this quiet shaded glen, away from the hustle and bustle of Downtown, you will find an eclectic mix of house styles and ages, every thing from old "Sears" Bungalows, Restored 1880's Victorians, post WWII cape cods, colonials ramblers split levels and new recently built homes.

Capitol View residents can enjoy living in this "woodsy, quiet and almost rural area that is between the hustle, bustle and convenience of Downtown Silver Spring and at one end and the quaint charm of the small town of Kensington at the other end.

The newsest addition to Capitol View Park is the Forest Glen Country Store Restaurant, which sits close to the neighborhood's boundary with Forest Glen.  Robin Smith and Gillian Clark, former owners of Colorado Kitchen in the District, recently opened a restaurant in the 1880s-era general store on Post Office Road next to the Forest Glen "Castle".

More information about Capitol View Park and it's history can be found through the Capitol View Park Citizens Association and the Capitol View Park Historical Society.

Silver Spring Real Estate - Quaint Acres

Tucked away in this wooded sylvan setting off New Hampshire Avenue near White Oak is the Neighborhood of Quaint Acres in Silver Spring, Md.  A Washington Post Article describes the setting in this neighborhood
to a tee.

The setting is perfect for the Mid Century Modern houses that were built there in the early to late 1950's. There are 156 Homes, most were built between 1948 and 1974 and each lot is a little over an acre. These great examples of custom built Mid-Century Modern Homes are what makes Quaint Acres a "Mid Century Modern House Lover's Paradise".

The oldest home is the original farmhouse built in 1853 where Quaint Acres Drive and Applegrove Road meet inside the Entrance to the Subdivision. The old farmhouse was the home of Altus Lacy Quaintance, the namesake for the neighborhood.

Contemporary Mid Century Modern architects and builders such as Charles Goodman and Frank Lloyd Wright  loved to make their homes seem as if they were one with nature.  Mid Century Modern Homes have simple, clean lines without a lot of embellishments. They use natural elements like stone, wood and glass, with a lot of floor to ceiling windows and vaulted ceilings. In a lot of the Modern homes, you get the feeling that you are outdoors when you are inside them. During this time period the homes in Quaint Acres were considered the epitomy of Luxury Living, much like the New Luxury Homes are thought of today.

This is a quiet, lovely neighborhood, where you can still find homes set back from the street on gorgeous, large, wooded lots, and NO McMansions what-so-ever.

New Pharmacy Opens next to Whole Foods in Downtown Silver Spring

There is a "new" pharmacy in the old Moto Photo storefront (next to Next Day Blinds) in the Whole Foods/Strosniders Shopping Center.  Upscale Care Rx has moved here from the Crescent Condos Location on the "crazy busy" part of Wayne Avenue.  It's way easier to get to now.

The Director, Dawit Tsegaye says "we have been very pleased" with this move and the traffic this week.

He looks forward to being able to hire people to work at the new store including pharmacy technicians and students.

There is more merchandise in this new location, such as greeting cards, hosiery, hair brushes, chapstick and other items you would normally find at a small mom and pop corner drugstore.

Upscale Care RX carries conventional as well as homeopathic medications.

They will flavor medications for your children or you, if needed, at no extra charge.

Upscale Care has FREE delivery.

What other Drugstore or Pharmacy in Silver Spring has this type of unique, friendly personalized service?

They're Here! The General Store is Open at Forest Glen

General Store Forest Glen

Finally, after years of being vacant, the quaint old Forest Glen Landmark has had quite the facelift and is getting a fresh start. The structure built in 1918 was Formerly the Forest Glen Country Store where they sold candy, treats, crafts, souveniers, nick naks and at one time had a small lunch cafe.

The owners of the former popular Colorado Kitchen in DC have opened a charming, southern style casual restaurant complete with "down home" atmosphere.  I love how they have kept the same basic layout, architectural features and old hardwood floors.

Silver Spring Real Estate and Home Sales in Woodmoor

Old Colesville Road Entrance to WoodmoorBoundaries: University Boulevard, Colesville Road (rt 29), Beltway 495 and Northwest Branch Park

Woodmoor and Indian Spring Village are the largest of the Legal Subdivisions in the Neighborhood known as Woodmoor.  Woodmoor's first homes were built in the late 1930s.  In the late 1930's, Indian Spring Country Club (now the Silver Spring YMCA) and Argyle Country Club (now Sligo Creek Public Golf Course) were a big draw for this quiet suburban "bedroom" community.  Saint Bernadette's Church and the opening of Saint B's school drew many young families to the Community.

The cool, art deco style, circa 1940's Woodmoor Shopping Center at the edge of this beautiful neighborhood was recently restored.  The medium sized, 3 story Shopping Center still has quaint, locally owned well known and long lasting mom and pop shops like the Woodmoor Pastry Silver Spring Real Estate Charming Cape Cod HouseShop, Santucci's Italian Deli, the Watch Pocket and Hoover Fisher's Florist to name a few.  The Silver Spring Stage has been operating for many years in the basement of the Woodmoor Shopping Center that  I hear, was once a bowling alley.  More well know chains such as a CVS Drugstore, a Starbucks and Subway are sprinkled in this mix of stores. A new Tuesday Morning Outlet opened in Woodmoor Shopping Center in the Fall of 2007.

The Northwest Branch Park and it's stream runs along the northern Boundary of Woodmoor and offers a rich opportunity for recreation and nature watching for Woodmoor Residents.  Woodmoor is a neighbor of the Northwest Branch and has it's own Woodmoor Green Team.

A pretty Neighborhood of 700+ Single Family Homes located in the Four Corners Area of Silver Spring, Md in 20901.  Woodmoor brings to mind, older charming Cape Cods, Colonials mixed with a few post-war Ramblers and Split Levels on neighborly, shady, tree lined streets.

Schools
The Montgomery County public school system is well known as one of the best in the nation.

Pinecrest Elementary (Grades 3-5)
