Searching for Sushi in Silver Spring, MD

I have finally found the best Sushi in Silver Spring!  I am very picky about my sushi, for years I would drive to Bethesda or have to head up the dreaded (crowded, congested with a traffic light every 1/4 mile) Rockville Pike to have sushi, because there was no place to get it in Silver Spring.  For a while, a sushi place opened up in Downtown Silver Spring, it was, to say the least, horrible sushi and a kinda scary place.  I don't remember the name of it because it was gone in less than a year.

I was delighted when Whole Foods got Sushi and that's were I've been getting it until about 5 months ago.  I have been back to test the sushi in this place for the past 5 months and it has been consistently fresh and better than I remember having in the best Bethesda or
DC sushi bar.  You can also get it delivered!  It is way
better than the sushi at Whole Foods (no offense,
Whole Foods I still couldn't live with out you all) and
another big perk is that it is LESS EXPENSIVE than
Whole Foods or a restaurant in
Bethesda.

The place is Spring Garden Restaurant -  They also serve pretty good Chinese Food.  They recently remodeled the restaurant a put in the separate jazzy new sushi bar.  If you are picky about your sushi - stop by and enjoy.

Maryland State Symbols - The Old and the New

Growing up as a Kid in Maryland, I knew that my State Flower was the Black Eyed Susan, My State Bird was a Baltimore Oriole and that my state song was "Maryland My Maryland" (sung to the tune of Tannenbaum O Tannenbaum or to me, Christmas Tree Oh Christmas Tree).

What I didn't know, is how Official State Symbols come to be, They actually take an act of the General Assembly of Maryland and are numbered Articles or Codes of Government. WOW

Now that I have grown up I've discovered that Maryland has a lot more Offical State Symbols:

A State Sport which is Jousting?,
A State Dog - the gorgeous Chesapeake Bay Retriever (since 1964)
A State Tree - the White Oak (since 1941)
A State Fish (since 1965)- The Striped Bass - We call it a "Rockfish" and it is Delicious
A State Crustacean - (since)1989 The Maryland Blue Crab (nothing in the world like these!)
A State Horse - (since 2003) The Thoroughbred Horse
A State Drink -  Milk since 1998
A State Reptile - (since 1994) the Diamondback Terrapin
Also University of Maryland Athletic Mascot since 1933 - Yeah Go TERPS!
A State Gem - The Patuxent River Stone since 2004
A State Folk Dance - since 1994 it's been Square Dancing
A State Boat - The Skipjack since 1985
A State Insect - The Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly

My biggest surprise is that since 2001 Maryland has had an Offical State Cat?  It is a Calico Cat!

"Effective October 1, 2001, the calico cat became the official cat of Maryland (Chapter 194, Acts of 2001; Code State Government Article, sec. 13-317). Its colors of orange, black, and white are shared with the Baltimore oriole (State bird) and the Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly (State insect)."

Just for fun and trivia Do you know what all your state symbols are and what they are all about?

Silver Spring, Md Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks Connection

The song Silver Springs was written by Stevie Nicks.   Legend has it that she got the idea while riding in a limo on the Capitol Beltway after a concert and seeing the sign for the Silver Spring, Maryland Exit.

Die-Hard Silver Springers and native residents will tell you they hate it when anyone makes Silver Spring plural.  That extra S drives a lot of us crazy (especially when a public offical makes this FAUX PAS!) if you listen carefully to the song Stevie never uses the plural or the dreaded extra S in the song.  The only place you'll find that extra S is in the title of the song.

More evidence of this legend that the song came from the beltway sign is the fact that the sign is a "blue green" color mentioned in the song. A lot of other people believe this legend.
